Simple Sunday- Starry Nights

In these countless stars, in their clusters and colors and constellations, in the “shooting” showers of blazing dust and ice, we have always found beauty. And in this beauty, the overwhelming size of the universe has seemed less ominous, earth’s own beauty more incredible. If indeed the numbers and distances of the night sky are so large that they become nearly meaningless, then let us find the meaning under our feet.”
― Paul Bogard, The End of Night: Searching for Natural Darkness in an Age of Artificial Light

“Humanity has the stars in its future, and that future is too important to be lost under the burden of juvenile folly and ignorant superstition.”― Isaac Asimov

“I have looked further into space than ever human being did before me. I have observed stars of which the light, it can be proved, must take two million years to reach the earth. [Having identified Uranus (1781), the first planet discovered since antiquity.]”― William Herschel

“The velvet tapestry of the night curved from horizon to horizon, flecked with thousands of tiny stars. There seemed all the more of them, for as well as filling the sky, they shimmered in an elegant ballet on the waves, the sea itself giving them life.”― Mary-Jean Harris, Aizai the Forgotten

“She said, ‘People are like stars, but it’s stories that turn us into constellations. If we don’t tell our stories, we burn alone in the dark.”― Jessica Khoury, Kalahari

Simple Sunday- Stars

“Few of us have seen the stars as folk saw them then – our cities and towns cast too much light into the night – but, from the village of Wall, the stars were laid out like worlds or like ideas, uncountable as the trees in a forest or the leaves on a tree.”― Neil Gaiman, Stardust

“Winter is the time for stories, staying fast by the glow of fire. And outside, in the darkness, the stars are brighter than you can possibly imagine.”
― Isabel Greenberg, The Encyclopedia of Early Earth

“And what is I was only supposed to burn for a certain amount of time?” I whispered. “What if I was only meant to shine for a while?”

“Then you truly don’t know what stars are meant to do.”

I looked at him in wonder.

“They are meant to give us hope in the face of infinity”.”
― Karina Halle, Love, in English

“Stars grounded her. Their distance offered perspective when she couldn’t see beyond her own pain”
― Lauren Kate, Teardrop

Simple Sunday- Stars

“For my part I know nothing with any certainty, but the sight of the stars makes me dream.”-Vincent Van Gogh

“Everybody thought I was a bit of an eccentric for wanting to be out there looking at the stars, but I still do.”-Brian May

“You can look up, you can see the stars, the moon and the sun, and you wonder: How does it all work? I didn’t have the answers, but I was thinking about all this floating amongst the stars. That is my objective.”-Wally Funk

“A head full of stars, just not in constellation yet.”― Elias Canetti

“Each of us is born to follow a star, be it bright and shining or dark and fated. Sometimes the path of these stars will cross, bringing love or hatred. However, if you look up at the skies on a clear night, out of all the countless lights that twinkle and shine, there will come one. That star will be seen in a blaze, burning a path of light across the roof of the earth, a great comet.”-Brian Jacques, Outcast of Redwall

“The Milky Way swooped diagonally across the heavens, reminding me of my utter insignificance, and at the same time my complete interconnection with everything. I was just a tiny speck of consciousness, and yet I was consciousness itself.”

Simple Sunday- Stars

“Stars, too, were time travelers. How many of those ancient points of light were the last echoes of suns now dead? How many had been born but their light not yet come this far? If all the suns but ours collapsed tonight, how many lifetimes would it take us to realize we were alone? I had always known the sky was full of mysteries—but not until now had I realized how full of them the earth was.-“Ransom Riggs

“Silently, one by one, in the infinite meadows of heaven, Blossomed the lovely stars, the forget-me-nots of the angels.”-Henry Wadsworth Longfellow,

“I like the stars. It’s the illusion of permanence, I think. I mean, they’re always flaring up and caving in and going out. But from here, I can pretend…I can pretend that things last. I can pretend that lives last longer than moments. Gods come, and gods go. Mortals flicker and flash and fade. Worlds don’t last; and stars and galaxies are transient, fleeting things that twinkle like fireflies and vanish into cold and dust. But I can pretend…”-Neil Gaiman

“Not just beautiful, though–the stars are like the trees in the forest, alive and breathing. And they’re watching me.”-Haruki Murakami

“We have calcium in our bones, iron in our veins, carbon in our souls, and nitrogen in our brains. 93 percent stardust, with souls made of flames, we are all just stars that have people names.”-Nikita Gill

“Dwell on the beauty of life. Watch the stars, and see yourself running with them.”-Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

“The glitter in the sky looks as if I could scoop it all up in my hands and let the stars swirl and touch one another but they are so distant so very far apart that they cannot feel the warmth of each other even though they are made of burning.”-Beth Revis, Across the Universe

“The Universe is under no obligation to make sense to you.”-Neil deGrasse Tyson

“Those are the same stars, and that is the same moon, that look down upon your brothers and sisters, and which they see as they look up to them, though they are ever so far away from us, and each other.”-Sojourner Truth

“I like the stars. It’s the illusion of permanence, I think. I mean, they’re always flaring up and caving in and going out. But from here, I can pretend…I can pretend that things last. Worlds don’t last; and stars and galaxies are transient, fleeting things that twinkle like fireflies and vanish into cold and dust. But I can pretend…” – Neil Gaiman, Brief Lives

“I’ve discovered that half the people would love to go into space and there’s no need to explain it to them. The other half can’t understand and I couldn’t explain it to them. If someone doesn’t know why, I can’t explain it.”-Sally Ride

“The sky calls to us. If we do not destroy ourselves, we will one day venture to the stars.” – Carl Sagan

Sewing

Sewing Fun

This will be a current and catch up sewing post. I realized that I never actually did a sewing review for the year. I’m sure I’ve missed things, but will try to update some of them as I find them. (Please excuse any sideways pictures. They look correct on my computer but weird in the library, so I have no idea if they are correct or not.)

I made this table runner for my Grandma in Law for Christmas. She collects Nutcrackers, so we thought it would be appropriate.

I also made a star suit by accident. 🙂 I made these jogger pants from this lovely french terry. The pattern is a modified version of the Linen Loungers. I just slimmed down the bottoms of the legs. Sadly, I’ve worn them so often that some of the stars have started to wear off.

I wear them multiple times a week for pjs. I didn’t think I would like jogger style pants, which are gathered around the ankles, but it turns out I love them. They are definitly lounge pants or pjs though. I wouldn’t wear them out in public, but they are lovely to put on after work. I made a bright pink pair too, but I don’t have a picture of them, as they are currently being worn.

There was enough of the fabric left over to try out a new pattern for a basic t shirt. This one is the Sweet Tee from Patterns for Pirates. It was a little tighter than I expected, but looks lovely with a cardigan.

It has stars too, so obviously my favorite.

I have made a couple more versions of the Sweet Tee. I made a brushed waffle knit sleep shirt, which I made longer and a little bigger. It is currently in the wash, so no pictures yet. It’s lovely and snuggly. The neckline went wonky on me, because it was too big, but it was just a sleep shirt, so I haven’t fixed it yet.

This version was made specially for Chinese New Year. I wore it today and it was very fun. I plan to wear it for our Chinese New Year party too.

Batch cutting has been helpful in making me actually do the projects I say I will do, although it depends on what color thread I have in my machine generally. I have three pairs of leggings waiting to be sewn because I have white on the machine and not black.

Fancy was my fabric inspector while I was trying to make these leggings, which were part of the batch. I couldn’t resist the dinosaurs and I have see a bunch of little kids who adore dinosaurs. Obviously, I needed the leggings. 🙂 The Husband just rolled his eyes at me.

Speaking of the office, I made another batch of doll clothes and it was requested that my doll have a friend and then would need a big enough wardrobe to share with said friend. 🙂

Simple Tee from Ellie and Mac Patterns
Paige from Made for Mermaids
Patterns for Pirates Bonny Skirt and leggings-galaxy and grey, CKC Emmalyn Cardigan- pandas and black, Made for Mermaids Cora Coulettes- purple and grey

Pajamas and dance leotards have also been requested. Apparently my doll’s wardrobe is still lacking a few essentials. Oh, and a doll nail salon? Who knew?

This fleece is a Relaxed Raglan from Patterns for Pirates. It’s super warm for my crafting and sewing downstairs. Or for the polar vortex anytime!

I made it a size or so bigger in case the fleece wasn’t as stretchy, but I could have sized down, I think. It’s tunic length so my rear will stay warm. I realized after I had sewn one sleeve in that I had accidently cut it out upside down. I didn’t think it was directional, but when I put it on, all my sewing supplies were upside down! Whoops! Again, not going to be out of the house, so I’ll just laugh a little and wear it anyway.

This shirt was made right before it got super cold, so I have only worn it once, but it’s really comfy. It’s a shortened Agnes Tunic from Halla Patterns.

So that’s what I’ve been up to sewing wise. I cleaned out a bunch of clothes that didn’t fit and have two and a half boxes to take to the thrift store. It feels good to be able to pare things down, but makes me realize that I have a few holes in my wardrobe. I need a plain grey cardigan, a few more solid color t-shirts, comfy underthings, which won’t get posted, and some solid color and printed dresses. Knit dresses are lovely things. Especially with pockets!

This dog of mine has stolen my pillow in an effort to tell me it’s bedtime, so I need to take my spot back.

It’s supposed to be super icy tomorrow morning, so I may have some extra time to sew! Hopefully everyone stays safe on the roads though.

Have a great night!
